Story behind the song
The song was written for the performance "My Sister Eve", in which more poetry and texts of Gertrude Stein were used. This song is a combination of the fragments of her poetry that enchanted me because of their nostalgic, almost heartbreaking, yet abstract images. The premiere of the show was in Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam in 2000.
Lyrics
ALMOND TREES IN THE HILL Text: Gertrude Stein Letters & dialogues Almond trees in the hill, we saw them today... Almond trees in the hill, we saw them today. Dear Alfred Bonnet do you want to know About almond trees, almond roots? Or you refer to olive roots? Those olive trees have larger roots. I do not know about almond trees. Dear Miss Watterson how can you cease to be troubled About the rest of the winter? To be troubled about the rest of the summer And the start of the winter?.. - Every night the snow falls! - Yes, and so do the asphodels. - There is no use in trying to accustom yourself to their beauty Dear Sir, I heard her hurrying. We all did. Good night, Isabelle Furness. - I like their names - Anthony Rosello - It is easy to name a street like that . - It is. With a view of trees and a hill. - We were there and the almond flowers turned into almond leafs. - Dear me it's windy. - Do you mean that a great many people were troubled? - Not a great many people. Some are happy and lucky and so are the others - We all have our wishes Almond trees in the hill, we saw them today...
