Story behind the song
Cowboys and Indians (Steven, Lesser) Recorded at: Goose Studio With: Venus in Furs Contribution: bass How: Jay Dee Supernatural Custom bass through DI. Written by Nicky Stevens and Jarrod Lesser Cowboys and Indians was a completed song that had already been recorded once before by the band. I had received a phone call from the drummer Adam Mumford in 1998 asking if I wanted to work on an EP as a session player, and after rehearsing a couple of times with the band we came to the decision that I would be a full time member. The entire EP was recorded in one day in piecemeal fashion - all of the drums first, then the bass, then the guitars with vocals coming last. From memory my part was done in one take with a couple of drop-ins. This was from a time when digital recording was not ubiquitous, so there was no "comping" several takes together to form the perfect performance. I enjoyed the melodic freedom that I was allowed with this band The EP was mastered at Festival Studios and still lacks a lot of punch - but this was typical of the indie music of the time in Sydney.
